Skeptical of riding in low tops again, this is one of the first pairs I’ve ridden in since I started reviewing shit. I was ready to try anything that toted to be anti-heel bruise. Etnies hyped them with some interesting info about the Evolution Foam technology. I heard nothing but good things and got them at a good price so I gave them a shot. Besides, they come in black/gum – A default colorway if you ask me.
Purchased at the beginning of last winter, I wore them exclusively for riding. First thing I noticed was the protection. The shoe really does have something going on in the heel that helps with heel bruises. It also has a cup-sole and a protective material on the toe-cap that makes for decent foot-jams. Battling a heal bruise when I bought these, there were a few times I bailed out of something and committed all my weight and felt the pocket save my heel. I don’t know if it was from the shoe being on the pedal or what but they slowly broke in and deformed.
Eventually I could start to feel my foot shift around on the pedal. As the bottom’s slowly started to decay, nothing else really went wrong with these shoes. I had my fair share of ankle dings on my crank but otherwise, the shoe held together like a champ. Once the bottoms wore away to the point where I could feel the individual pedal pins, I knew time was up. These were decent kicks. My only real complaint is that they don’t come in a mid version.
Durability: Construction- 10/10 Heel cushion- 10/10
Price: $39 – $64.99
Conclusion: If you don’t mind low tops, give these shoes a try.
What shoe should we review next? Have a shoe suggestion? let us know in the comments. I’m always on the lookout for a good shoe. Right now I’m leaning towards the Van’s Chukka mids. A decent black or black/gum midtop is hard to find.
